Have you heard about Suite101 but you are not sure what it’s all about? Or perhaps you’ve come across the term “residual income” but don’t really know what it is. Well, let me take a few minutes to tell you about it and share my plans with you on how I am going to use Suite101 to build a decent amount of residual income.
Suite101 is an online magazine. Taken directly from their about page:
Suite101′s door is open to the curious novice looking for a “101″ intro to any of our 3000 topics, but it’s also a meeting place for over 27 million readers each month who ask 101 burning questions.
We aim for the ground-floor appeal our name implies, spiced with an eclectic mix of topical commentary and candid advice.
With 13 years online, more than 400,000 articles and over 15,000 professional, paid contract writers, Suite101 is dedicated to delivering great articles by skilled writers. In doing so, we aim to create opportunities for writers at every stage of their careers.
Suite101 pays by the amount of page views each article receives each month, for the life of the article. So, an article may only earn $1 – $2 a month, if you have that article up for three years, you will eventually earn more for each article than would you earn if you had received up front pay.
This is where the residual income comes in. An author writes an article for Suite101, or any other residual income site, and then continues to earn income on that article without ever having to touch it again. Though, you will want to update any outdated information to keep your article relevant.
Many freelance writers write for a combination of up front payment and residual income. What is really great about having residual income is that if you have a slow month, you can still count on some money coming in. This is especially important for unexpected down-times, such as sick times, vacations, internet connection issues.
One of the down-sides to writing for residual income is that you do not earn money quickly. This means that in order to make a significant monthly income from your residual sites, you’ll have to have a lot of articles published. Many experts and experienced writers claim that they did not start receiving a significant residual income until they had about 300 articles posted at the residual site of their choice.
Since it takes time to build up all those articles, most writers have a plan and aim to publish a few article a week or month. Every writer’s plan will be different, based on the time available for that writer. What is important is that you keep publishing articles on a regular basis and eventually you could see hundreds of dollars a month on residual income.
I am also formulating a plan to publish articles on Suite101 to build a residual income. I have not yet committed to a certain number of articles a week or month, but the seed has been planted. I will also be providing updates on my progress and earnings here, so others will have a realistic expectation on how this works.
I published my first article on Suite101 on December 16, 2010 called Jump Right into Freelance Writing. By the end of the month, I had earned $1.25. That goes right along with what I’ve read from others, which is to expect to make between $1 and $2 per article. Since that article was only published for 2 out of the 4 weeks of the month, I’m very happy with that earning amount!
This morning, I published my second article, The Conservative Way to Start Freelance Writing. This will give me a good idea on how much I can earn when an article is published for an entire month. So, I will be watching to see how this article does!
If these two articles look familiar, they are rewrites from two articles I posted here! The “Jump right In” Way to Start Freelance Writing, and The Conservative Way To Start Freelance Writing. As I was rewriting these articles, updating them and improving them for Suite101, I thought that these could be great ebooks! So, I might add creating two ebooks to my 2011 project list.
If you are familiar with residual income, and you currently publish articles to generate residual income, do you create residual income with Suite101? What is your favorite residual income site?
