I am happy to announce a new content company, called Populis Create. This company is based in Ireland and hires people from all over the world. It is considered Europe’s version of Demand Studios.
Taken directly from Populis Create’s website, they describe themselves as:
…one of Europe’s fastest growing digital media companies
With a network of over 500 web properties visited by more than 26 million unique users every month, we provide vibrant content to passionate communities, crowdsourced from a team of expert collaborators and published on our wholly owned and operated websites including Excite Europe, Nanopublishing and Better Deals….We are a truly European company active in seven languages and ten markets (UK, Germany, Netherlands, France, Italy, Spain, Sweden, United States, Australia, Brazil)
I signed up and have written two articles for Populis Create as of this writing. Here is what I can tell you about Populis Create at this time:
Pay Rate = The payment depends on the complexity of the article, and the article length. The majority of articles are 500 words for €6.66 ($9.45 USD).
Payday = weekly, via paypal, as long as you reach at least €15 ($21.28 USD). If not, your earnings will roll over to the next week.
Minimum/Maximum Article Limitations = Writers have no limitations as to how many or few articles they write. New writers are restricted to claiming 5 articles at a time, including those in review. At some point, that restriction will be lifted, but at this time I’m not sure the guidelines on it.
Author By-lines = At this time, authors are not given a by-line. But, according to Populis Create’s website, in the future, outstanding writers will have by-lines.
To apply = visit http://www.populis.com/create and click on Apply Now. Then, register by providing the requested information. Your application will be examined and if it is accepted you will receive your login details and a user guide via email. Note: that at the time of this writing it is taking between one and two weeks to receive notification that you are hired or not.
My Personal Experience
I have written two articles for Populis Create, both travel type of articles. I really like the format of entering in the required information in specific areas in the writer’s CMS panel. Actually, I like it a LOT better than Demand’s workdesk. Each section gives you the rules, word counts, and any other pertinent information needed for that section.
Pictures And Tags
Like Demand Studios and many other writing sites since Google’s Panda update, Populis Create requires writers to insert a picture and add tags to every article. The pictures can only come from Flicker and YouTube, and have a size limitation of 355 x 120 and 8kb. I had a hard time getting my first picture to load. Finally, the trick was:
- Download the picture from Flicker onto your computer.
- Upload that same picture from your computer to Picnik.com.
- Go to the Edit tab and click on resize.
- Enter 355 x 120 in the dimensions boxes
- Uncheck the “keep proportions” box
- Hit “okay”
- Go to Save & Share tab and verify at the bottom that the size is 8KB or less
- Save back to your own computer. Use the same name and replace original file
- Go back to Populis Create and upload photo. Continue the process to complete and submit your article.
Review Times
I wrote one article yesterday, and the other one today. Neither have been reviewed. Word on the street that review times are rather slow, but keep in mind that this is a new company and they may not have a lot of editors yet.
Please Provide Feedback
If you apply to Populis Create, leave a comment and let us know what you think! If you have been writing there for a bit and have received a payment, let us know what day payday is on, and how long your average review times are.
There are not many weekly paying writing jobs out there, and non that I know of that pay this well.. so I’m pretty excited about this opportunity and I hope it continues to do well!

I am looking for new places to write and this sounded great. However, when I went to fill out the application, it doesn’t give the option for the US. Wonder if they aren’t hiring in the US at the moment.

Oh, yes! I forgot to mention that. Just choose Uk. And when you are writing the articles here set Word’s language to English-UK. Make sure your American or Canadian address is on your resume! Good luck in applying.

hello there, i just recently stumbled upon Populis, and plan on applying. I wasn’t able to find any reviews for the site other than this one. I just have a question about the photo submissions. Does flicker allow any photos in their database to be used for such purposes? Most photo sharing sites I know of have usage restrictions.

That is a great question! When choosing photos ar flickr, you want to go to the “creative commons” section of pictures. And when you upload the picture, include the photographer’s name in the first box and then the link to the pic on flickr in the second box. That is all the credit needed for those photos in the “creative commons” group”.
Good luck! I love writing there!

Congrats, Ciara!
Yes, the keywords you need to use will be listed as the title when you first accept an item. You then have to add words to make it a more appealing title. For example, if the keywords are “ladies ski jacket” You make the title “How To Find A Cheap Ladies Ski Jacket”. I hope that helps! Let me know if you have any other questions!

Thanks Janis! O.k, and what about when the title is July 1 holidays? I cant get flight details as the date has already passed? And also, when its asking about cheap holidays/flights it sometimes doesn’t specify where from, any ideas what to do?
Thanks again!

Hi Again Ciara!
Well, this is where your creative writing comes in…You may not be able to get specific details on flights for July 1, but you can provide websites where fight deals are located and tell the reader to check that site for July 1st deals. You could say something about the current lowest prices (just pick any destination in the UK, or provide the prices for a few different really good deals for different fights in the UK)and then say something about how July 1st deals could be even better.
Yes, there are a lot of times where specific places or brand names, or other things like that are not provided. Again, this is where you use your writing skills. Just pick different places and provide a few different samples of prices of different flights, hotels, holidays, breaks, or whatever you feel fits. And make sure you indicate the website where you are finding these deals so readers can go check them out for themselves.
Let me know again if you have any questions, or feel free to email me directly using the contact form on this site.
Good Luck!

Hi Angie, the review time at Populis Create varies. I’ve had some get approved within a few hours, others a day, and others 2 weeks! I have a strong feeling that editors are assigned topics, because I’ve noticed a trend that the clothing type articles, like all the ski jacket ones, are taking longer to approve, but the travel and jobs articles seem to be reviewed within 1-3 days.

Hey,
I’m really enjoying writing for Populis Create but I’ve noticed that suddenly there are no articles available to write. Does this happen frequently on Populis in your experience (that question is directed at all Populis writers!)? I like the freedom with titles which you don’t see on other sites.
Happy writing!

Hi Caz,
I’ve never logged in to find no articles to write. And before I responded to you, I logged in again and I see there are 136 titles to write. I bet it has to do with your specialties. You can go to your desktop and on the left side choose #NOTRAD. It will show you the list of categories you are currently signed up for. You can then use the link at the bottom to contact them to request additional categories. The more categories you are assigned to, the more work you’ll have! Good luck!

Hi Janis,
All has been going well for me and populis since we last spoke, until last week. After writing over 60 reviews with no returns or rejections, I got my first last week. Since then I have had almost every one returned and then rejected – I am doing everything the same as I usually do but now I am receiving reports of errors. Anyone else finding this? Also, I am downloading my images from Flickr but my last few returns say the picture is copyrighted, how can I tell the difference?
Any help you could offer would be great!

Hi Ciara!
I’m glad Populis has been going so well for you, but that stinks that the last week has been trouble for you. What are the editors saying is the reason for the reject, other than the picture errors? They should be leaving comments for you. As for the pictures, take a look at my post How To Upload Pictures To Populis Create, specifically the first couple steps. You have to make sure you are choosing images from the “creative commons” group, and then from there, pick “Attribution License.” Then search within that group to get the pictures you need. All other pictures on the site are copyrighted. You can tell if they are copyrighted because underneath the picture (when it’s on it’s own page, not on the preview screen) it will say “Looking for the HTML code and photo file link? Check out this FAQ. ” If you right click on the picture, it will also say “All Rights Reserved.” When you use pictures in the Creative Commons, Attribution License, which means that as long as you give credit to the picture (attribution) you can use it. Also, when you right click on the picture it will say “Some Rights Reserved.” And, on the picture’s page, it will not have that message underneath that says “Looking for the HTML code…..” That should prevent you from being rejected because of copyrighted pictures. Let me know if you have any other questions!

Hi,
I am hoping someone can help me. I have been writing for Populis around 6-weeks and never had any real problems beyond the odd glitch, which I put down to the newness of the site.
They have paid as regular as clockwork every Tuesday between 8.30am and 10.00am (uk). Except for this week….my pay that was due on the 6th never arrived, I sent 3 messages that day through their internal system and did not receive a reply. On Wednesday I sent another message and got a reply saying “we are having difficulties with payments, we apologize for this” and I have heard nothing since. Titles are still being dropped but I am reluctant to write!
Anyone else having problems?? (I made more than 15 euros so I know it’s not that)
Thanks JJ

Hi J.J.
Wow, this stinks! I haven’t written there in about two weeks but I know that when they sent the bonus payment at the end of August, they sent it twice. At least to me they did. They can’t reverse the PayPal, so now my next 5 articles are prepaid and they will take that out of my next payment. Maybe that double bonus payment is part of the issue? When I first started a couple months ago, my very first week, they had an issue and payment was delayed for 1 week. Since then, no other problems, until now. I wouldn’t give up hope on them. They are a brand new company to glitches are pretty much to be expected. Let us know what happens and if your hear anything back or get paid!
Thanks and good luck!

I started last week writing in Populis Create (spanish). I’m very happy, I like the system and I’m agree with the prize of articles. I would like to know the last news from the writers with more experience.
Finally, do you receive your payments ok? How is going the payment in this moments? Are you writing yet?

I’ve been writing for Populis for almost 8 months. For the past 3 weeks, I haven’t seen any new articles come up.
Just 2 days ago, I was able to snag one, when I logged in. There was only 1 topic available in my que.
Anyone know what’s going on here?
I mean seriously, they just acquired like 2 companies or something. It’s not like they are hurting in the finances department. There should be a plethora of articles availble to write.
Janis, have you logged in to view available articles lately?

Hi Karl,
I don’t know what’s going on, but yes, I haven’t had any articles either. I did log in on Saturday and was able to claim 20 articles. But when I logged in today, they are gone and the work queue is empty. I’ve got to get those 20 articles written in the next 20 hours, or I’ll lose them and who knows when Populis will have more work. I didnt know they acquired 2 new companies. Maybe they are busy with that and once things settle down, they’ll have more assignments. I hope anyway!
Karl says:
09/19/2011 at 5:18 pm (UTC -5 )
Maybe that’s what’s been happening. I understand they changed the ability to do from 10 articles up to 20 now. So, that’s what’s probably happening. Everyone is going ahead & selecting 20 articles at a time which reduces the overall availability.
It’s possible that they are not replenishing the que fast enough.
But yeah, they did acquire a large blog network, which shouldn’t have nothing to do with adding new titles to the que. That’s what the content specialists have been hired for. I know they had a large hiring spree this year alone.
So, something is up. It really stinks though, cause, there’s not many companies that guarantee weekly payments. This kind of mess makes Populis seem not reliable & can’t depend on them anymore.
Other companies need to change from that 1 month payment program to either weekly or twice weekly. That’s going to the norm in the future.

I bet it’s a combination of people taking 20 articles at a time, them not loading new items into the queue fast enough, and hiring a lot of people. I agree, I wish there were more weekly paying companies. I know QualityGal pays weekly, Valley Direct Media, now Textbroker, and I think a place called Hubshout. Cloud Crowd pays daily, and shoot, there’s another place where you write short blurbs that pays daily, BP I think is the initials. I’ll have to look into that. CopyPress has recently gone from a monthly to twice a month payments.

Hi Janis,
thank you for the info about payment. Did you mean that you are better paid after the delay in your payment? Could you tell us how much do you get for article?
Karl, about the availability of topics, I just write in spanish and I have more than 1.400 topics for choose with the five categories that are activated at first.
I would like to know if you know more sites for writing in Spanish with a payment of 5, 6 or more euros for article.
Thank you very much! It’s great to share views in a meeting point for writers like this

Hi Bego!
I’m happy to have you get into the conversation! Populis Create pays 6.66 EUR per article. I think it’s the same for everyone. No, with the delay in payment at Populis I received my regular amount, it was just late. However, they are running a special and for every 5 articles you write in a week, they’ll pay you a bonus of 6.66 EURO, so it’s like getting paid for 6 articles when you only wrote 5. This special bonus is only going through the end of September. While you will still get your regular weekly payment, these bonus payments are being accumulated and paid out at the end of the month.
The only other place that I know that accepts Spanish writers is Cloud Crowd, and you can translate too, between English and Spanish. But they pay via PayPal, in US dollars. I’m not sure the amount per article for translation, but I saw some that were as high as $20 per translation!

I’m looking into Cloud Crown.
I have write to Populis for extend the categories that I write but the told me that it’s impossible :S Then, I just can write in 5 categories. Is it only possible to extend categories when there aren’t issues?
In the spanish version we charge 6 euros for every article, 0,66 less than the english version
but it’s ok, it’s a good payment and is little difference to what is usual. In general, the content in Spanish is paid very low compared to other European languages, I supposed it’s because they can pay less in Latin America, I don’t know. In any case, I hope it remains in 6 euros
What about the Copy Editor work? Anybody do it too? What about the payment in this case? In the spanish version you can send the candidature but today told me that not are not making test at the moment

Hi there, anyone knows what is happening at populis! I have been writing there for a month with the work flow being good. But having put 35 topics without rejection, I get rejections for every other article I send in, and it ultimately gets rejected. I have not changed my writing style nor the tone I use there. Hi elmakui,
I have not had any articles suddenly rejected. I have not idea what’s going on over there at this point, but I do know that they are making a lot of writers angry! If you are really dependent on your writing for an income, I wouldn’t waste my time at Populis at this point. They are so hit or miss… if they even have articles available. But I wouldn’t cancel my account with them either. I’m hold on in the hopes that some changes are made and things get better there. I’ll try every once in a while to see how things go.

They had log in issues for a couple of hours yesterday, so a lot people on writers’ boards were saying they couldn’t get in to finish draft articles.
They also have had absolutely nothing to write for 5 days now. They make me laugh with their press releases about “competing with Demand Studios”. Not a chance. They’re too clueless about the freelance writing world and are making a lot of writers angry. Besides you can’t compete with Demand when you release a few hundred articles a few times a week. Demand publishes more than 50,000 articles a month!
I’m like you Janis. Have pretty much given up on Populis. Will check back occasionally but I have too much work elsewhere to waste my time keep looking for non-existent articles. A shame as it looked like it would be a good gig at first

About the bonus, Populis explain me in an e-mail that will be paid only one time in october for the bonus accumulated during the summer.

Interesting info. I’ve been writing for Populis since early September, and have had no payment issues, but there’s been no articles for me since Sunday, when just the one appeared.
If anyone here has recently been burned at Wikio, then, trust me, things could get worse. I didn’t see Skyword mentioned here, but that pays well – if you can get hits, otherwise it’s zilch. Demand’s titles are drying up, so it’s a case of just looking around. Copify pays pretty well, but everything seems snapped up in an instant there.
Oh, I wish I paid more attention to Spanish lessons in school!

@Rance, I thought we had got a good place after wikio went down(Guess i used to see you in the populis thread-huh?)
@TB, there was that problem on the 27th and I was also having the same problem. But the system told me it was under repair and maintenance. Everything got back into the real figures later in the day.
But again, the problem of rejection is still on and I think it is time to quit populis and do some other work elsewhere. No titles for many days…….

Hi, Bego. Following you back on Twitter! Re Skyword, just found this blog post, so looks promising for you: http://www.skyword.com/press/42-press-releases/82-skyword-to-recruit-hundreds-of-spanish-language-freelance-writers.html I think they ask you if you write in English or Spanish when you apply, but I could be wrong. Copify is mainly English language. I think the exception would be re translation work. But Copify just doesn’t have enough work available.
Hi, Elmakui, I see Populis has been down for maintenance for a long time. It could be either the beginning of the end, or maybe a lot of jobs will appear when the site’s up again. I like working there. Much better than Demand, but things don’t look promising at Populis. I’m experimenting with Fiverr.com. Just thinking, as writers, what we can offer people. I’m not a fan of the bidding sites, and I was told on one I’d be given regular work writing for a soccer website. The website just never happened.
I think if we’re European, African, Asian, South American, Australasian, or Canadian then our choices are more limited, as some sites don’t accept non-US citizens. I’m interested in writing for Examiner, but I don’t qualify.
The rejections are always a worry, especially as you’ve had a rush of them. If they’re recruiting Demand editors then Populis won’t be such a nice company to write for, as DS eds can be brutal. But I just don’t know what’s going on at Populis. They seem to have a strong financial base. There hasn’t been a title there for me since Sunday. I need to eat, so I can’t hang around forever!

Hi Bego,
Yes, Skyword hires Spanish writers on their Impremedia program. In fact, this is a Spanish-only program under skyword. But you have to note that they do not pay upfront for this program. The pay is as follows:
Period 1 Month
Article Published $0.00
100 Views $1.00
150 Views $1.50
250 Views $1.50
500 Views $3.50
750 Views $2.50
Monthly Bonus Earnings
10,000 Views $10.00
For over 10,000 views get $10 for every additional 10,000 views (up to 500,000 views).
I am happy for you if you won the ipad on Wikio for the Spanish part. The irony about Wikio UK was that the first confessed that he had not put any articles on the site but won because of referrals. but the second drawing was on work done

Well, in this moment, we haven’t problems at the spanish versions. Last week, we hadn’t topics available since thursday but today we have again. Some minutes ago, we had 51 topics available but I only can take 5 at time. I hope they add more topics soon!
Paul, if anything is clear is that, at this time, Populis should an extra job and not a principal, because the demand it’s so variable. I think it’s the main feature of these platforms.
In other article of this blog (http://freelancewriterroad.com/2011/09/is-populis-create-going-out-of-business/#comments), Ann and Janis commented some interesting info. Maybe there’s some changes at the strategy of Populis and it seem they are dispatching some editors, so try to do better than never your work at Populis!
Elmakui, thank you for the info! it’s great that they accept Spanish writers, but in this case, it isn’t moneymaking for me. I must convert dollars to euros and I think the pay is very low. Anyway, thank you very much for the info

I was let go as well, and it was not only a massive shock but a major loss of income as well. I can’t help but wonder if there’s bigger issues behind the mass firings and low title availability. Other writers report that there’s hardly any work to be had now, and that even hitting the 5 article limit is a struggle.
